Takin’ a Trip to 1996 (feat. Griff)
Episode 6: Big Skin Hearts – Big Skin Hearts (Nub Records)
This album’s a hard one to talk about if only because I have a fuzzy memory and what little research I did for this review led to nothing of importance. I have no idea on what day the album was released, or even if it has an official release date, but it’s copyrighted 1996 and based on the criteria of these reviews, that’s good enough. All the instruments on the album were performed by a man named Chris Foreman, who was based out of Chickasha, Oklahoma (the record company that released the album was based out of Norman). To say there’s a lot of distortion on this album would be an understatement. The guitars, bass, and vocals are all drenched in the distorted awesomeness of the nineties. The songs are high energy and very punkish, while the vocals are catchy even when they’re unintelligible or complete and utter nonsense. The thing I always liked about this album, though, is that Foreman genuinely seems to be having fun, which contrasts with a lot of the music done in the mainstream at the time. He didn’t take it too seriously, he’s not trying to say anything important, he’s just making music for the sheer joy of it, and it comes across quite nicely.
