WHISKEY AND BEER

We were all drinking
and singing a song
written in 1992 
it was Nirvana
or Alice in Chains
might have been a Soundgarden tune
all that I know
is during the second verse
I knocked over Willie’s last beer
I said, “I’ll get you a new one”
then turned away and noticed Jane’s curly hair

All of the girls down in Texas
they like their whiskey and beer
while all of the girls in Oklahoma
just fuck with our heads

Jane was a waitress
about twenty-three
she had the bluest blue eyes
she had a boyfriend
in Kalamazoo
he’ll break her heart in July
she’d work for hours
and never take a break
I tried to think of something to say
I said, “I need a beer”
and gave her a tip
it wasn’t the best of my days

We were ready to leave
around two o’clock
Charlie was singing last call
the goons in the back
were flirting with Jane
I didn’t like them at all
the short balding man
with the Tweety tattoo
saw me staring them down
so he punched me in the face
the throat and the groin
the police later took him downtown
