Track 6 from Ten Golden Oldies.
Two-chord Happiness
She was standing in the shadows of the midday sun
The stars were shining brightly in her eyes
I walked past her perfumed silhouette
And I knew my life would never be the same
I’d walk a thousand miles just to see her face
And I’d walk through hell just to hold her hand
It took all the strength I had just to say hello
And to this day I can’t recall her name
Then she said
Happiness, that’s not for me
So goddamn happiness, that’s not for me
She slipped through the fingers of a dozen men
And sparked a thousand fires in between
We talked to each other for what seemed like days
And no one else knows loneliness like me
She pulled her hair back with a small soft hand
And laughed at every word I had to say
She motioned to leave and we said goodbye
And now my life will never be the same
But she said
She was standing in the shadows of the midday sun
The stars were shining brightly in her eyes
I walked past her perfumed silhouette
And I knew my life would never be the same
She slipped through the fingers of a dozen men
And sparked a thousand fires in between
I’ve been lonelier than heaven since she went away
But I know that she’ll be running back some day
Then I said
