Here’s a song I wrote based partly on the Dust Bowl era and partly on a poem called, “A Dutch Proverb” by Matthew Prior. Hope you enjoy.
Oklahoma Dirt
I was a farmer down in Oklahoma
Trying to make a living off of Oklahoma dirt
A storm started brewing and the wind started blowing
And it’s hard to make a living off of Oklahoma dirt
La la lala la (etc.)
I had a woman down in Oklahoma
She was a pretty girl when she was seventeen
She was mighty gay when she up and went away
And the only thing she left me was my Oklahoma dirt
La la lala la (etc.)
I had a stallion down in Oklahoma
His feet were faster and whiter than the sea
One day he drowned and I had to put him down
Now he’s resting six feet under my Oklahoma dirt
La la lala la (etc.)
I had a farm house down in Oklahoma
Built by my father in eighteen eighty-three
A storm started brewing and the wind started blowing
Now half of it is buried in the Oklahoma dirt
La la lala la (etc.)
All of my good friends down in Oklahoma
Tried to make a living on their Oklahoma dirt
But they packed up their corn and moved to Californ
Cause it’s hard to make a living off of Oklahoma dirt
La la lala la (etc.)
I was a farmer down in Oklahoma
Trying to make a living off of Oklahoma dirt
Everything I owned has left me all alone
But the only thing that didn’t was my Oklahoma dirt
